Critically acclaimed, multi-award winning TV show Mad Men is back with its much anticipated fifth series now on DVD. There are thirteen episodes in the series which enable us to pick up the stories of the lead characters again in May 1966 and to follow their progression through to spring 1967.
Mad Men was created and produced by Matthew Weiner (of The Sopranos fame). It is set in the 1960s and the plot is based around an advertising agency, mainly focusing on its creative director Don Draper, and the people who feature in his life, both in his workplace... and in his private acquaintanceship. The series has been applauded for its historical accuracy - with its retrospective insight into social values and 1960s culture - illustrating behavioural patterns and highlighting contentious issues typical of the time, such as widespread smoking, drinking, drugs, sexism, feminism, adultery, homophobia, and racism.
The fifth series re-joins recently married Don Draper; top executive at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce advertising agency. New wife Megan decides to pursue a career in acting, putting their marriage under a lot of strain, while Pete, Roger, Joan and Peggy continue their personal battles to survive in the fraught, cut-throat, highly competitive, unpredictable world of business.
As usual, the presentation - visual style, costume design, acting, writing etc - is first-rate and provides addictive viewing. This series is also included in a box set - Mad Men - Season 1-5.
