Anouk Aimee stars in this psychological drama, based on Jean Genet's screenplay, about a repressed woman's desire for an immigrant woodcutter. In a small French village, recently arrive schoolteacher 'Mademoiselle' (Aimee) becomes obsessed by Manou (Ettore Manni), an itinerant logger who finds it easy to accept the advances of the local women. But when she realises that Manou has ignored her, she begins setting fire to barns, poisoning cattle, and opening floodgates in a deliberate attempt to turn the villagers' suspicion onto the object of her obsession.
