Magician: The Astonishing Life & Work of Orson Welles (DVD) DVD

| DVD

2015 marks the centenary year of the remarkable Orson Welles, and this insightful documentary explores the enigma and polymath that was Welles. Jean-Luc Godard once said of this exceptional actor, writer and director: All of us will always owe him everything. Directed by critically-acclaimed documentary maker, Chuck Workman, Magician divides Welles' life into four chapters, with Workman portraying him as an artist who never stopped working throughout his career, but whose unconventional approach ensured he was much misunderstood by Hollywood. Magician is a montage,... featuring scenes from almost every existing Welles film - from Hearts of Age to rarely-seen clips from his final unfinished films such as Don Quixote - as well as his television and commercial work. This is an essential film not just for fans of the great Orson Welles, but anyone interested in the magic of cinema. [show more]

Featuring new interviews with Welles authorities including Simon Callow and Peter Bogdanovich, and illustrated with a wealth of archival material and film extracts, Magician reveals a pioneering, uncompromising artist who, although misunderstood in his own time, is now rightfully lauded as a master of his art.

Documentary exploring the life and work of acclaimed film-maker Orson Welles. The feature chronicles his life from an early age when he was viewed as a musical prodigy at the age of 10 and subsequently directed Shakespeare, became an accomplished magician and starred on stage and radio before he turned 20. Featuring interviews with the man himself alongside those who admired and were influenced by his work, the film explores his career after co-writing, directing and starring in his first movie 'Citizen Kane' (1941), aged only 25. With footage from his catalogue of works as well as previously unseen material, the documentary follows his struggles as a Hollywood director and his battles for creative control with major film studios.
