Denzel Washington is a disillisioned soldier of fortune who grows close to a child he is paid to protect. When she is abducted, his fiery rage is unleashed on those he feels responsible, and he stops at nothing to save her.
Man on Fire, starring Denzel Washington and directed by Tony Scott is a fast-paced action thriller. It boasts a wonderful performance by Dakota Fanning as the child Washington is hired to protect. The sparky relationship between these leads is fun to watch.
Washington plays Creasy, a washed-up, alcohol loving ex-CIA agent. He becomes bodyguard for the young daughter of a wealthy family in Mexico City. Of course the child is kidnapped by while in Creasy's care, even though he takes out a number of the kidnappers in the process. The ensuing exhange of ransom for the girl is compromised when the police arrive and shoot the brother of the gang leader. He kills the girl and Creasy goes on the rampage. As he tracks down those involved in the kidnapping the body count rises, as does the artillery he uses and the explosive nature of his revenge. Some of those on his hit list are either police or connected to the police, while others are connected to the family. When the girl's Mexican father is implicated Creasy allows him to shoot himself. We then find out the girl is still alive and Creasy joins forces with her American mother to save her. The climactic ending sees Creasy blow himself up - literally a 'man on fire' - as he takes the gang boss with him. As well as the two main performances there are excellent cameos by Mickey Rourke and Christopher Walken, while the film is shot at a cracking pace with tension constantly mounting. This is a must for fans of action films, but it also has a very soft side when the relationship between Fanning and Washington is developed. This then provides the film's raison d'etre and directly leads to the exciting ending.
Set in Mexico City, the story of a washed up ex-serviceman with a drink problem who becomes bodyguard to a young girl with rich parents. The storyline is fairly obvious and the film, although watchable, gives no surprises with it's bland storyline.
