In his first BBC series, marine biologist and professional diver, Monty Halls, turns his back on city life to become a 21st century beachcomber on the West Coast of Scotland. Inspired by his childhood love of otters, Monty and his dog Reuben move into a run-down cattle shed overlooking an isolated beach. And it couldn't start any better. Unbroken sunshine allows him to explore the highlands and islands, looking for basking sharks, dolphins, seals, red deer, and of course otters. The sea shimmers in the sunlight, the sky is cornflower blue, and he experiences the... west coast of Scotland at its most glorious. Monty fishes for mackerel as well as raising pigs, sheep, hens and growing his own vegetables. But he also throws himself enthusiastically into community life, taking part in the Applecross games, running the annual Glamaig Hill Race and throwing an impromptu beach party. [show more]

Series in which ex-Royal Marine Monty Halls leaves the big city behind to experience life as a beachcomber on the west coast of Scotland. Foregoing as many of the conveniences of modern life as possible, Monty and his dog, Reuben, move into a disused cattle shed on an isolated stretch of coast and set about making the beach a home. As well as learning how to grow and catch his own food, Monty becomes involved with the local community and takes part in the famous Glamaig Hill Race.
