Feelgood comedy drama about an unlikely friendship between an elderly widow and a young author. After the death of her husband, Mrs Palfrey (Joan Plowright) decides to leave her home in Scotland and relocate to London to be nearer her grandson Desmond (Lorcan O'Toole). Taking up residence in the Claremont, a seen-better-days hotel, she soon finds that life in the city can be lonely, especially when she fails to make contact with Desmond. But while out walking one day, she meets and befriends twenty-something struggling author Ludovic Meyer (Rupert Friend) and, as the weeks pass, the two realise they share a lot of interests in common.
