Colin Clark (Eddie Redmayne), a young film student, manages to wangle himself a job on Sir Laurence Olivier's (Kenneth Branagh) set during the shooting of The Prince and the Showgirl. He becomes completely absorbed and totally infatuated with the star of the film, the legendary blonde bombshell; Marilyn Monroe (Michelle Williams). What ensues is a fascinating insight into Monroe's world, both from her own perspective and those of the people around her; her followers, fans and her work colleagues. While Olivier and his team are desperately trying to make things run... smoothly, dealing with her excessive demands and lack of acting ability, we see Marilyn herself struggling with her inner demons, trying to cope with fame, beauty, her insecurity and her desperation to become a better actress. Our snapshot of Marilyn's private feelings (she had recently married Arthur Miller) are provided by Colin's brief closeness to her as she allows him access to her inner thoughts for a short while during the making of the film. Williams received BAFTA and Oscar nominations for her performance in this film; delivering a sensitive, anguished, believably realistic portrayal throughout. Heart-rending stuff. [show more]

Drama based on the memoirs of Colin Clark, who worked as an assistant on the set of 'The Prince and the Showgirl', the 1956 British-made film starring Laurence Olivier and Marilyn Monroe. Monroe (Michelle Williams) has recently married playwright Arthur Miller (Dougray Scott), and filming coincides with their British honeymoon. But when Miller returns to America, 23-year-old Colin (Eddie Redmayne), assistant to the irascible Olivier (Kenneth Branagh), seizes his opportunity and escorts the star on a short break in the English countryside. As she experiences the charms of the country and relaxes from the pressures of her celebrity and her work, Monroe recounts her remarkable story and reveals the fragile foundation of contradictions and insecurities on which her stardom is built. Judi Dench, Emma Watson and Dominic Cooper co-star.
