Whoever was responsible for putting Smells Like Teen Spirit on heavy MTV rotation in 1992 was probably unaware that this would be the starting gun for a new era of alternative rock. It is anybody's guess what made him or her bet on this weird horse that seemed far out of the usual line of mainstream music video fare but it earned MTV the jackpot. During most of the video a dishevelled unenthusiastic guy waves his blond shoulder-length hair before the camera while he struts a four-chord riff song. Nevertheless Seattle-based Nirvana hit the raw nerve of the Zeitgeist... to become the (stage-managed) mouthpiece of their generation. Whether intended or not is open to debate but one thing seems certain: guitarist and singer/songwriter Kurt Cobain probably didn't set out to become a role model for millions of teenagers in the first place.
