Monte Wildhorn (Freeman), a former award-winning writer of Western-themed novels, moves to his nephew (Kenan Thompson)'s idyllic lakeside home to spend the summer. His nephew thinks he is giving Monte a chance to resume his writing after a long hiatus, but the cynical and curmudgeonly Monte is only interested in utilising his free time drinking. Into Monte's life walks Charlotte O'Neil (Madsen) with her three daughters, Willow (Madeline Carroll), Finnegan (Emma Fuhrmann) and Flora (Nicolette Pierini), who are also at the lake for the summer after Charlotte's divorce from the children's father. Initially, Monte seems less than impressed with the thought of staying nearby the family. But as he spends more and more time around them an unlikely bond forms and his bitter cynicism and harsh outlook begin to soften...
