1062Preserved Lines traces the history of over a hundred railways lines from its BR demise to the present day celebrating the history, preservation, restoration and people involved with some of the UK s finest heritage railway lines. This 4 DVD gift set allows you to enjoy the preservation with a nostalgic look at some of Britain s most loved lines. Built in 1865, the Avon Valley Railway runs southeast from suburban Oldland Common, through once rural Bitton and on into the beautiful Avon Valley. The branch became a mainline route best known for carrying holiday passengers... from Manchester and the Midlands south to the sandy beaches of Dorset and Bournemouth. It fully redundant by 1971 and its rebirth was been far from easy, but still run by mainly volunteers operates a regular timetable today. The Bluebell Line was the UK s first preserved standard gauge passenger railways, reopening part of the Lewes to East Grinstead line. Since then it s preserved for posterity, a county branch line, its steam locomotives, coaches and goods stock, signalling system and operating practises. The Swanage railway, travelling through the stunning Purbeck countryside between Norden and the seaside town of Swanage, offers a more intensive heritage steam and diesel train service than virtually any other preserved railway operating every day of the week between April and October. The Gloucestershire Warwickshire line commands wonderful views of sleepy hamlets and villages through the beautiful Cotswolds countryside. The line was closed to passengers in 1960, but still ran as a goods line until 1976. It was restored to its former glory in the 1980s.4923 [show more]

Documentary celebrating the heritage railways lines that are largely kept running by volunteers. A great number of British railway lines have fallen into disuse over the past century. This documentary tells the story of those that are preserved by heritage foundations, who often run restored historic trains along the lines to keep this element of the past alive.
