Papusza is based on the true story of the Roma poet BronisÅawa Wajs (1908-Â1987). The film follows Papusza's life from birth to old age: arranged marriage as a small girl, her life in a gypsy tabor before, during and after second world war, then forced settlement in communist Poland and urban life in poverty. Her meeting with the Polish poet Jerzy Ficowski, who discovered her great talent for poetry and published her works led to a tragic paradox: a famous poet was living in poverty, rejected by the Roma community for betraying their secrets. With beautiful monochrome... photography, Papusza gives insight into the Roma way of life, soon to be swept away by WWII and the following communist regime. Speaking mostly in Roma language, the ensemble of actors includes mostly non-Âprofessionals from Roma families. Click Images to Enlarge [show more]

Biopic drama based on the life of little-known Polish-Romani poet Bronislawa Wajs, known as Papusza, from writer-director duo Joanna Kos-Krauze and Krzysztof Krauze. Literate from a young age, despite the consternation of her family who forbade her from reading, Papusza (Jowita Budnik) marries at 15 and begins performing songs with her husband Dionizy Wajs (Zbigniew Walerys). In 1949, poet Jerzy Ficowski (Antoni Pawlicki) hears one of her performances, befriends the couple and translates her lyrics from Romani to Polish and publishes them. This simultaneously projects her to fame and recognition, and destroys her home life while she is rejected by the gypsy community.
