Felicity Huffman, Patricia Clarkson and Elle Fanning star in this touching drama written and directed by Daniel Barnz. Phoebe (Fanning), a talented but troubled young student who finds it difficult to control her behaviour, wants nothing more than to be included in the school production of Alice in Wonderland. Meanwhile, Hillary (Huffman) and Peter (Bill Pullman), Phoebe's parents, struggle to cope with their daughter's issues at home which means their family dynamic is forever in threat of being ruined. Thankfully, Miss Dodger (Clarkson), the drama teacher in charge of the school production, recognises Phoebe's talent and gives her the creative outlet she so desires. But, as her behaviour gradually grows worse over time and the fantasy world she seems to inhabit becomes more and more apparent, all those involved begin to worry about Phoebe...
