PYAASA is the story of the life and loves of an unsuccessful poet who could achieve neither fame nor prosperity in his lifetime. Vijay is a poet whose poems none of the old traditional publishers accept. They want poems on love not on hunger. Vijay's home life is miserable. Since leaving College he has not settled down to any job. His brothers taunt and insult him and sell the paper on which his poems are written as waste papers to a grocer for a few annas. Vijay in trying to trace the papers finds that a woman has taken them away from the grocer. He then comes across... the streetwalker who had taken away his manuscript and remembered his songs by heart. He tries to retrieve his manuscript but fails. Meanwhile Vijay goes to the annual function of his college to recite some poems of his. There he meets Meena the girl with whom he had a flaming romance in his College days. Meena is married to Mr. Ghosh a publisher who offers him a job in his establishment. However the job does not last for long as the publisher gets suspicious of Meena's attachment to Vijay and the poet is once again without a job. While still jobless Vijay learns of the death of his mother - the breaking of the last link with his home. He is desperate and depressed. A friend misleads him and gets him drunk and then takes him to the house of a dancing girl. There Vijay witnesses the tragedy of the fallen women and feels for them. In the same locality he again comes across the streetwalker who sensing his frustration gives him her sympathy and encouragement. But Vijay tells her that he has made up his mind to end his life. The streetwalker puts him to sleep but finds him missing the next morning. After a few days the newspaper announces the news of his death. After his death his poems are published and become a great success. Vijay wins posthumous fame.PYAASA is the undying Spirit of man of the hopes and fears the frustrations and ambitions and the craving for love and friendship that is in every human heart. [show more]
