The battle for the 1991 World Rally Championship had raged all season and Britain's RAC Rally would host the final showdown between Toyota's Carlos Sainz and Lancia's Juha Kankkunen. It would prove another classic confrontation between two giants of the sport. Kankkunen had battled his way into title contention and led going into the RAC. Sainz would need to finish in the top five and ahead of his rival to claim the crown.
