With his American culture, his youth and notoriety, and his gift for public relations, Benjamin Millepied is about to dramatically shake up, upset and rejuvenate the prestigious French institution, l'Opéra National de Paris. Designated director of the company in 2014, Millepied is preparing to unveil his first ballet on the 25th September 2015. From the very first rehearsal up until opening night, directors Thierry Demaiziere and Alban Teurlai have immersed themselves in the world of the Paris Opera, right at the heart of its artistic creation. Benjamin Millepied's... creative process was inspired by a musical score, penned by his friend, Niko Muhly. A former ballet dancer, Millepied imagines and arranges his choreographies in front of the studio mirror. This act of creating unfolds within one of the most beautiful locations in the world: the Palais Garnier. Within these walls, nothing escapes the cameras gaze; we discover the intimacy of the dressing rooms, the backstage corridors, the rotundas, the Opera House's inner recesses Ambition, rivalry and jealousy prosper behind Garnier's infamous facade. Relationships naturally develop between the choreographer and his dancers. Millepied, who painstakingly searches for the right gesture and the perfect movement, is a new pillar bolstering an institution whose traditions have been firmly forged over time. [show more]

French documentary from Thierry Demaizière and Alban Teurlai about the choreographer and dancer Benjamin Millepied, who devised the ballet depicted in the 2010 thriller 'Black Swan', and his work as director of the Paris Opera Ballet. The documentary concerns 'Clear, Loud, Bright, Forward', Millepied's first production as director, and how it came to be. It follows Millepied and the performers over three months of preparation and rehearsal, documenting the rarely seen aspects of a production which do not garner as much attention, but without which the peformance could never be made. Mistakes, injuries, disagreements and the highs and lows of production are captured candidly, with Millepied's own attitude offering insight into the frenetic, energised character of the man and his rigorous approach and unwavering commitment to his art.
