Paul Greengrass's debut feature is a drama set against the backdrop of the 1982 Falklands conflict. David Thewlis stars as Kevin Deakin, a young soldier failing to cope with the strain of war. Having gone missing presumed dead during the conflict, Kevin is given a hero's memorial service and much posthumous applause in his northern home town. But when he later turns up at the army barracks bedraggled and terrified, it becomes apparent that the truth behind his disappearance is less straightforward.

Kevin Deakin went missing at the height of the Falklands War and was reported as missing, presumed dead. Forty-nine days later Kevin returns apparantly suffering from amnesia. Already commemorated as a war hero he becomes an embarrassment to the country who honoured him....did he desert or did he really get lost in the chaos? Based on a true story.
