Following the separation of his parents, the adolescent Raimond (Kodi Smit-McPhee) watches his Romanian father Romulus (Eric Bana) descend into despair after his German mother Christina (Franka Potente) leaves him and has a child with the brother of his best friend, Hora (Marton Csokas).
