The 2007 World Cup really has been a rollercoaster ride for the England rugby team and their supporters. Branded the worst team ever to defend the trophy, England struggled against the USA, a team they expected to beat comfortably, before crashing to a humiliating 36-0 defeat at the hands of the South Africans. Even the most passionate English fan envisaged more misery to come and a quarter-final defeat at best. Thankfully, rugby is gloriously unpredictable. Faced with two crucial knockout matches while still in the group stages, the men in white managed to negotiate... their way past the physical Samoa and Tonga sides without ever looking all that convincing. Australia loomed in the next round, aching for revenge for the 2003 final and seemingly certain of victory. Except nobody told England. A mighty performance from the forwards and the ever-reliable boot of Jonny Wilkinson saw them face the hosts in a tense, highly-charged semi-final that see-sawed from one side to the other. England's early lead was overhauled by French penalties before that man Wilkinson once again came to the rescue. This is the comeback of all time and somehow, magically, bewilderingly, wonderfully, England are in the final again to face South Africa, their destroyers from the group stage. If this was a Hollywood script, you wouldn't believe it.--Alex Hinton [show more]
