How do you introduce the tranquil, gratifyingly pleasurable pastime of salmon fishing to a severely bleak, thoroughly infertile expanse of desert that is a totally unsuitable environment for maintaining fish? If you are a multi-millionaire Yemeni Sheik with a vision, willing to spare no expense to enhance the lives of your people, you would instruct one of your staff to hire Britain's chief fisheries specialist and give him the task of making it happen. And this story forms the basis of this 2011 rom-com directed by Lasse Hallstrom.
After laughingly dismissing... this bizarre job as mission impossible, the fisheries expert Dr Alfred (Fred) Jones (Ewan McGregor), slowly begins to warm to the idea and starts to put everything he can into making this dream a reality. Along with the Sheik (Amr Waked) and his staff representative Harriet (Emily Blunt) and being unwillingly spurred on by the fanatical interest of the Prime Minister's over-eager press secretary (Kristin Scott Thomas) who is desperately seeking a good-will story, he works tirelessly on towards making the project a success.
Further complications arise though when Fred predictably begins to fall in love with Harriet who already has a boyfriend. This requires her to decide which of the two suitors she prefers. Another problem comes to light when it is discovered that local militants are trying to sabotage the salmon fishing project just as it is beginning to achieve some success. Where will this quirky, enjoyable, humorous, very watchable story end?

A handful of curious Brits become literal fish out of water as they become mixed up in the dream project of an eccentric sheikh in this satiric comedy. Dr. Alfred Jones (Ewan McGregor) is a scientist specializing in establishing fisheries who is muddling through a midlife crisis and a marriage that's going sour when he's approached by Patricia Maxwell (Kristin Scott Thomas) with an unusual proposition. Maxwell works for the Prime Minister of Yemen, and in tandem with a remarkably wealthy sheikh (Amr Waked), he wants to introduce sport fishing to the Middle East as a way to promote better international relations. Jones isn't interested at first, but between Maxwell's aggressive enthusiasm and the beauty of Harriet Chetwode-Talbot (Emily Blunt), a lovely businesswoman hired by the sheikh to make his dream a reality, he changes his mind and sets out to create a fully stocked lake in the midst of a desert.
