Romantic comedy drama based on the successful stage play. George (Alan Alda) and Doris (Ellen Burstyn) meet by chance over dinner at a California inn in the 1950s. Although both are married to others, they find themselves in the same bed the next morning wondering how they got there. This romantic encounter leads the seemingly mismatched pair to agree to meet on the same weekend each year. As those years grow into decades, the two are seen changing and ageing, always in the same room in different scenes. Each helps the other with the challenges and crises that life throws up, and their relationship deepens as history's tide rolls on.
