Shine is an acclaimed Australian 1996 biopic about overcoming odds. It follows the life of Australian piano virtuoso David Helfgott and his heart-wrenching struggles with his mental health, his war-disturbed polish-Jewish father and his fixation with the virtually unplayable "Rach 3" - Rachmaninov's fast-fingered Concerto.
Told using flashbacks, we see David growing-up and becoming a child prodigy while his father constantly bombards him with his experiences of war and hell that his family faced in the concentration camps. Finally he escapes his father... and studies overseas, but he eventually suffers a breakdown and has to return home to Australia and a life in an institution. After many years David is released and eventually starts playing again in a bar, before finally regaining his confidence and returning to the concert stage where he belongs.
Utterly inspiring, Shine is fresh and emotive, without being overly sentimental, so there's no surprise that it received seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay and won Best Actor for Geoffrey Rush.

The true story of pianist David Helfgott. In Australia in the 1950s, child prodigy David (an Oscar-winning Geoffrey Rush) is pushed hard by his father, Peter, and catches the attention of music tutor Ben Rosen, who teaches David for free. Ben encourages David to learn Rachmaninov's 3rd Concerto, but Peter forbids it, thinking that the piece is too complex. When David departs for a scholarship at London's Royal College of Music, Peter severs all ties with his son. As the young musician comes to perform the concerto he collapses, suffering a nervous breakdown.
