Produced, directed and starring Raj Kapoor, India's favourite storyteller, Shree 420 (1955) is one of Bollywood's all-time classics. It's the story of Raj Saxena (Kapoor), a man who leaves his small hometown to arrive in Bombay, city of opportunities, to pursue his dreams of success with honesty, uprightness and a good education. Following his arrival he learns that Bombay has no place for such values; a strong division in the social structure... defines it. The rich rule through underground activities and cheating the poor, and the poor survive these blows by begging, stealing and working the highly prevalent black market. As he struggles to find a place in the city, Raj meets Vidya (Nargis), a school teacher with similar values and they quickly fall in love. However, when he is offered a chance to move into debauched high society he soon finds himself shifting far away from his values and Vidya into a world of treachery where no price is too much to pay for success.
