It's about the life of a miserable school teacher (Miles-Giamatti) who has recently failed in getting a publishing deal for his novel and his friend (Jack - Haden Church) who is about to get married in a week. Jack decides to go on a week-week long roadtrip and take Miles with him as a 'gift' for being his best man.
The film follows the events in this one week trip. Although the film isn't meant to be a total comedy, there are some very funny bits as well as some dramatic and emotional scenes.
All in all it was a great film with a satisfying ending. If you liked films like Closer and Lost in Tranlsation you will enjoy this film; But if you're more into the Action stuff or the more sleazy comedies like Meet the Fockers, you probably wont enjoy this as much as I did.

Comedy drama which follows Miles (Paul Giamatti), an unsuccessful novelist, and Jack (Thomas Haden Church), an equally unsuccessful actor who is about to get married. They decide to take a trip to California in an attempt to sow their wild oats. There they explore the nature of their failures and question their relationships. Jack has an affair and wonders whether he should call off the marriage. Miles, recently divorced himself, questions whether or not he made the right decision.

Please note this is a region 2 DVD and will require a region 2 (Europe) or region Free DVD Player in order to play.   Following ABOUT SCHMIDT and ELECTION, Alexander Payne once again focuses on the comedy of personal tragedy in the hilarious and poignant SIDEWAYS. Paul Giamatti (AMERICAN SPLENDOR) plays Miles, the film's antihero, a failed author and self-defeatist who still pines for his ex-wife, who divorced him years before. Meanwhile, Miles's old friend Jack (Thomas Haden Church) is getting married, and the two set off on a bachelors' road trip through California wine country. While Miles looks forward to male bonding over the best bottles the vineyards can offer, Jack is a playful philanderer who just wants to get laid. Thus, this fortysomething odd couple find themselves in conflict, leading to a chaotic week of disagreements, miscast romance with some local women (Virginia Madsen and Sandra Oh), and eventually, total meltdown. Payne's artistic direction and excellent character construction will have viewers reeling with laughter, while also feeling true compassion for these two easy-to-read buddies. The film offers beautiful photography of the California countryside, some unique insight into the wine industry, and a soundtrack featuring tunes by Luna, Pat Travers, Bonnie Raitt, and others. Viewers will come away from SIDEWAYS with a smile on their faces, and a thirst for a nice glass of Pinot Noir.
