Set in Shoe Lane chambers in London, the path to the top is fraught with endless problems compounded by jealousy, competition and subterfuge. Martha Costello (Maxine Peake) is hard working and naively idealistic, totally believing the maxim "innocent until proven guilty. Clive Reader (Rupert Penry-Jones) on the other hand is flamboyant, extremely talented and super-confident. Both are in line for the prestigious... title. The problem is there is only one opening for QC.
With a diverse range of higher profile, more challenging cases to deal with when she finally becomes QC and with some of them testing her to the absolute limit, Martha's enduring faith in the British Criminal Justice System may be beginning to falter. The pressure doesn't stop at work either; the love lives of these ambitious barristers are as convoluted and problematic as their elite careers.
This series has been very well received during its TV showing; the characters are strong and colourful and the courtroom scenes are very realistically represented.
