This 1981 documentary about Jamaica's finest group of reggae instrumentalists combines insightful band interviews and discussions with live performances from the open air of a Kingston courtyard. Formed in the 1970s The Soul Syndicate Band has provided backing for records by Bob Marley and The Wailers The Heptones Burning Spear Jimmy Cliff and many others. The film is unique in its blend of tension and relaxation and its movement between city and the country. The film shifts back and forth between the band as an ensemble with individual members telling tales or reciting... philosophy. Much emphasis is placed on the lead guitarist Earl Chinna Smith and the Rastafarian belief in a deliverance from Babylon which together with the music gives the film a prophetic edge. [show more]
