Many famous companies served the area, notably the London and North Western Railway, the Great Central Railway and the Midland Railway. Today many of their steam locomotives can still be seen hard at work on both the preserved railways and the main lines of the Midlands as the great railway preservation movement has striven to keep their memories alive. Long after the GWR had ceased to exist it continued its pull on the imagination of both enthusiast and general traveller alike, ensuring that much of the system has seen its magnificent Brunswick Green locomotives, from Pannier tanks to Kings, continue to work throughout the last decade. Today it is possible to travel over almost the whole of the Great Western Railway with a great variety of its original locomotives.
