Sugar Ray Leonard was a ring genius a marvellous combination puncher with impeccable footwork and an acute ring brain. He was an Olympic gold medallist in Montreal and went on to hold world titles in five weight divisions in an amazing 20-year career. Leonard fought the greats of his era: Roberto Duran Marvin Hagler and Thomas Hearns but eveything began the day he boxed for his first world championship contest - at welterweight against another precocious talent Wilfred Benitez in the atmospheric outdoor arena at Caesars Palace Las Vegas in 1979. The welterweight division... has produced some of the best boxers in the history of the sport. In the 1930s Jimmy McLarnin and Barney Ross had a marvellous three-fight series with every single fight hanging on a thread. The great Henry Armstrong known as Homicide Hank made 20 defences of the welterweight title in only two years. Kid Gavilan and Johnny Saxton were great crowd-pleasers of the 1950s Jose Napoles dominated the 1960s and 1970s and Ray Leonard and Thomas Hearns met in a classic unification fight in 1981. Witness these great boxing moments here. [show more]
