Under the stewardship of head coach Gus Poyet a rampant Sunderland team marched onto the St. James' Park turf as if they owned it taking the lead in the 19th minute and from then on never relinquished control. A Jack Colback rocket 10 minutes from time sealed the fate of the opposition... - earning a 3-0 victory for Sunderland in a season in which the Black Cats had already triumphed 2-1 over Newcastle. Sunderland took the lead thanks to the coolest of penalty strikes by Fabio Borini who converted after Vurnon Anita's bundled attempt to challenge Phil Bardsley resulted in a foul and from then on the Black Cats never looked back.
