Sarah Maloney (Miranda Richardson) is researching a book on the poet Mary Swann, who was murdered by her lover. Rose Hindmarch (Brenda Fricker) was Mary's friend and the custodian of her work, but after meeting Rose, Sarah discovers discrepancies between Mary's original manuscripts and her printed work.
