Very loosely based on the account of his parents in Ingmar Bergman's autobiography 'The Magic Lantern', the film begins in 1909 when Henrik (Samuel Froler) is studying to be a priest. Though engaged to a waitress, he falls in love with Anna (Pernilla August) but their relationship is disapproved of by both mothers. After many misunderstandings (intercepted love letters etc) they do get married but Anna finds life with a poor parish priest frustratingly austere. Winner of the Palme D'Or at Cannes 1992.
