The Blues Brothers (Dir. John Landis 1980): They'll never get caught. They're on a mission from God. After the release of Jake Blues (John Belushi) from prison he and brother Elwood (Dan Aykroyd) go to visit the orphanage where they were raised by nuns. They learn that the church stopped its support and will sell the place unless the tax on the property is paid within 11 days. The brothers decide to raise the money by putting their blues band back together and stagin
This has to go down as one of the greatest comedy films in history. It has a large cult following, which isn't really surprising considering the quality of this entertainment.
A fairly simple storyline, involving raising money for an orphanage with a deadline, is boosted tremendously by the inclusion of great blues songs and terrific attitude by the instantly recognisable Jake and Elwood (John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd). To back them up, some major musicians appear, including Aretha Franklin (absolutely the greatest female soul singer of all time) and Steve Cropper (a highly respected guitarist, of Booker T. and the MGs). Plus, you can see various cameos by names such as Steven Spielberg, Frank Oz, and Twiggy.
The music is a daring blend of styles - and it works. Even if you're not very interested in the blues, you should still watch this - it might just change your mind.
Easily one of the best films ever. Highly recommended.
