The Bridge (Bron in Swedish or Broen in Danish) is a gruesome tale which begins on the Oresund Bridge where a woman's body is discovered cut entirely in two and lying exactly across the border between Denmark and Sweden. The subsequent revelation that one half of the body belongs to a Danish prostitute and the other half to a Swedish politician prompts unusual measures; the formation of a Danish/Swedish police collaboration - a team specially set up to investigate this bizarre murder.
The key characters, Swedish Saga Noren of Malmo (played by Sofia Helin)... and Danish Martin Rohde of Copenhagen (played by Kim Bodnia) head up the team for their respective countries and a good deal of friction ensues. Both are colourful, interesting personalities while at the same time exhibiting somewhat dysfunctional traits; Martin - the jovial, laid back family man with too many kids (and twins on the way) being unable to remain faithful to his wife, and Saga - uptight, serious, powerful, competent and beautiful but so lacking in social skills it seems obvious she must be autistic. As the plot develops, so does our insight into these two complicated individuals. Despite their differences, the pair manage to co-operate and together they slowly work out the killer's modus operandi, his psychological profile and his necessity to draw attention to the two countries treatment of the deprived and the homeless.
As the team attempt make sense of the many frustrating twists and turns they encounter and piece together the baffling array of seemingly isolated facts surrounding the case, they skilfully inch their way towards a satisfactory conclusion. This is compelling viewing indeed and any second series is sure to be well received.
