Four independent British films. The internationally successful adaptation of Irvine Welsh's cult novel 'Trainspotting' (1995) was credited with heralding a renaissance in British film-making. Mark Renton (Ewan McGregor) is the most self-aware of a group of heroin addicts living in Edinburgh, even though his attempts to kick the habit are generally short-lived. Along with friends Spud, Sick Boy and the psychotic Begbie (Robert Carlyle), he roams the city looking for kicks and opportunities to finance his next fix. 'Shallow Grave' (1994) is a gory thriller set in Edinburgh. Three yuppie flatmates (Kerry Fox, Christopher Eccleston and Ewan McGregor) advertise for a fourth person to join them in their swanky apartment. They end up with a mysterious man (Keith Allen) who promptly dies in his bed of a drug overdose, leaving a million pounds cash in a suitcase under his bed. The greedy threesome then agree to dispose of the body and keep the loot. However, this means cutting off the hands and feet of the corpse, smashing the teeth, and finally burying it in the woods. They also ignore the rightful owners of the money, remaining unaware that those owners are, along with the police, hot on their trail. In 'Sexy Beast' (2000), gangster Gary Dove (Ray Winstone) has retired to a villa on the Costa Del Sol, where he lives with ex-porn star wife DeeDee (Amanda Redman) and spends his time lazing by the pool and dining out with friends. All is well until Gary's psychotic former colleague Dan Logan (Ben Kingsley) arrives in Spain, determined to persuade him to do one last job. Dan is now in the employ of London crime kingpin Teddy Bass (Ian McShane), who intends to rob the bank of his sometime lover Harry (James Fox). Gary maintains that he has turned his back on his criminal past, but Dan is not prepared to take no for an answer... 'Gangster No.1' (2000) is set in 1968 London. Gangster (Paul Bettany) is rising fast through the ranks of Freddie Mays' (David Thewlis) crime organisation, his ruthless efficiency soon making him Freddie's right-hand man. But when Freddie falls for nightclub hostess Karen (Saffron Burrows), Gangster becomes jealous and begins to hatch a plot to get rid of Freddie for good.
