Jack McKee (William Hurt) is a successful but somewhat cynical heart surgeon, who discovers what it is like to be on the receiving end of impersonal treatment when he is diagnosed as having throat cancer. Jack begins revising his dispassionate attitude to his own patients, and becomes close to another sufferer (Elizabeth Perkins) as her condition begins to deteriorate.
