Four-part drama starring Samantha Bond and Daisuke Ryu. The series tells the story of young Scot Mary Mackenzie (Bond) who, realising what she wants in life, travels thousands of miles to the Far East where her fiancé, Captain Richard Collingsworth (Adrian Rawlins) is stationed. Although he initially sees her presence as a distraction, Richard marries Mary and they begin their married life in Manchuria. When Richard receives a new posting, Mary is left alone and finds comfort in the arms of Count Kentaro Kurihama (Ryu) who, unbeknown to her, already has a wife.
