This is David Fincher's adaptation of the first novel in the widely popular Millenium Trilogy written by Swedish author Steig Larsson. This version from Columbia Pictures stars Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara and Christopher Plummer.
The story begins at the conclusion of a libel suit brought against Swedish journalist Mikael Blomquist (Craig) part owner of Millennium magazine by crooked financial tycoon Hans-Erik Wennestrom. Blomquist discovers he has failed in his attempt to clear his name so decides to step out of the limelight at Millennium for six months... prior to the start of his prison sentence to allow things to cool down. He is offered the chance to use this time to work for Henrik Vanger (Plummer) who wants him to investigate the disappearance of his niece forty years previously. He is teamed up with Milton Security's best researcher, Lisbeth Salander (Mara), an angry but fragile, antisocial computer hacker (known as Wasp) with a photographic memory and Asperger's syndrome (amongst her many other attributes) to accomplish his task.
This gritty crime thriller has some shocking, explicitly violent scenes including cruel physical abuse, a sadistically brutal rape incident and Salander's vicious revenge against her aggressor, plus some horrifically gruesome scenes inside the repulsive torture chamber of a serial killer but these are necessary to progress the plot and are not overdone.
