Buuel's first ""comeback"" film since L'Age d'Or in 1930 (he made only a few musicals in the interim) El Gran Calavera concerns a family's attempts to change the patriarch's somewhat indulgent and hedonistic ways by fooling him into thinking his large fortune is gone. They assume a life of poverty in Mexico in an attempt to teach him a lesson. However he discovers it's a ruse but continues to perpetuate the facade of ignorance while sneaking off during the day to conduct his thriving business. Why? To teach his family a lesson - they are all lazy worthless leeches!

Dark comedy by Spanish surrealist Luis Bunuel. Alfredo (Luis Alconira) is a wealthy man whose relatives attempt to convince him that his fortune has run dry in order to curb his hedonistic, indulgent lifestyle. The family assume a life of poverty in but it isn't long before Alfredo discovers his relatives' sneaky plot. However, in order to teach his family a lesson, he decides to feign ignorance and secretly slips away each day to run his successful business.
In order to curb the spending of their father, a family conspires to give him the impression that his considerable wealth has gone. Having created a poverty stricken façade, the family members believe that they have the old man fooled, but he susses their plan and plays their game in order to behave as he had before. THE GREAT MADCAP see director Luis Bunuel expressing the lighter side of his talents, as seen in ASCENT TO HEAVEN, rather than the bleak and surrealistic LE CHIEN ANDALOU and BELLE DE JOUR.
