Gulf War--The Soldier's Tale consists of three 48-minute documentaries made as a collaboration between ITN and Discovery Networks Europe to mark the tenth anniversary of the Gulf War in 1991. The programmes draw on material from the ITN News and US Department of Defence Military archives, reports from CNN, "amateur-video" footage and, as the subtitle suggests, lots of retrospective interviews with (Western) military personnel. Perhaps it is too soon for a broader, more detached account of the conflict, but this is very much Operation Desert Storm through the eyes of... the allied military. Presumably we will have to wait until Saddam Hussein is out of power before both sides of the story can be told. The first episode recounts the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq, and the Western response of sending a massive allied force to Saudi Arabia, leading up the moment when British forces struck back. The second programme is devoted to the aerial assault and the concluding instalment documents the war on the ground. Together the episodes provide a detailed--if self-congratulatory--military history, the real strength of which lies in the personal stories of the men and women involved, serving as a solid companion to such dramas as Bravo Two Zero and Three Kings. --Gary S.
