A couple (Mark Wahlberg and Zooey Deschanel) go on the run from a mysterious environmental phenomenon that threatens their way of life.
I have never been a fan of Shyamalan"s films, but the nature of the mixed reviews surrounding "The Happening" really piqued my interest: It sounded like it broke the mold of disaster movies, with an aura of calm, not panic; the whole environmental angle was appealing; and the mystery of the disaster (one day in Central Park lose control over their actions, their train of thought before starting to kill themselves) intriguing. (And I"ve never had a problem with "boring" films; as a friend of mine says there are plenty of "great boring films".) All these things really are in the movies, and the movie looks good - he uses the American landscapes well, and dramatically. I like Mark Wahlberg too. However, there was something about the film that I didn"t like, the same reason I don"t really like other Shyamalan films - they aren"t really any fun. He seems to take his work too seriously, or perhaps thinks that other people aren"t as smart as him, and don"t really get his films. The "twist" at the end of "The Village" is a good example of this - kind of obvious, but delivered as though it was the end of "The Usual Suspects". He"s not the first person to contemplate nature taking its revenge on the abusive human race (numerous nuclear-interested Japanese monster movies and computer games attest to that), but makes his film like he is nonetheless. Despite this, the film is still good, possibly Shyamalan"s best since "The Sixth Sense", I can"t help liking it, and think that it is worth watching. (4/5)

Featuring Mark Whalberg, John Leguizamo and Zooey Deschanel The Happening sees the world turn upside down as a cataclysmic natural crisis threatens to end the world!
Paranoid, end-of-the-world thriller, in which a science teacher and his family try to outrun a neurotoxin sweeping the country. Lecturing his students about the mass disappearance of bees, teacher Elliot Moore (Mark Wahlberg) is informed that a wave of mass suicides is occurring across the country, initially believed to be some form of biological terrorist attack. Deciding to leave town by train with his wife Alma (Zooey Deschanel), fellow teacher Julian (John Leguizamo) and Julian's daughter Jess (Ashlyn Sanchez), the train finally comes to a halt before its final destination when the crew loses contact with the outside world. As the full enormity of the situation sinks in, what little information available from news reports suggests that the rapidly spreading neurotoxin is emanating from plants, and being spread on the wind. As the suicide pandemic reaches ever smaller population centres, Elliot, Alma and Jess have to fend for themselves, desperately seeking shelter from the approaching storm.
