The Last Station DVD

| DVD

The Last Station (2009) is a biographical picture about Russian writer and philosopher Leo Tolstoy, based on the novel of the same name written by Jay Parini. The film premiered at the Telluride Film Festival and was nominated for two Best Performance Oscars for both Christopher Plummer (Leo Tolstoy) and Helen Mirren (Sofya Tolstoy).

Directed by Michael Hoffman, this historical drama explores the troubled marriage and turbulent final year of 82-year-old Leo Tolstoy's life. In the final months of his life, his wife and muse Sofya battles for the... copyright to his works, but his manipulative yet loyal partisan Vladimir Chertkov wants the money from War And Peace to go to the Russian people to help advance the resistance, even if this means effectively disinheriting the writer's family.

This biopic is engrossing, emotive and surprisingly funny for a film if its kind. It has perfect performances from Mirren and Plummer and is intelligently crafted for an entertaining and gripping watch.
"The Last Station" is a love story set during the last year of the life and turbulent marriage of the great Russian writer Leo Tolstoy and his wife the Countess Sofya.

Historical drama based on the last chapter in the life of Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy. Christopher Plummer stars as the famous writer, who is nearing the end of his life after a long period of ill health. He lives with his family in a compound at Yasnaya Polyana, attended to by his wife and the disciples of his 'movement': a group of people dedicated to his ideas of pacifism, vegetarianism, sexual abstinence and communal property who have gathered in a nearby forest camp. When the head of the movement, Vladimir Chertkov (Paul Giamatti), urges Leo to rewrite his will to posthumously renounce his material possessions, thereby leaving his family with nothing, Tolstoy's wife Sofya (Helen Mirren) does all she can to influence her husband and protect her inheritance.

The final year of Russian socialist writer Leo Tolstoy's life comes to the screen with Christopher Plummer in the lead role and Helen Mirren portraying his wife, Sofya. Paul Giamatti, James McAvoy, and Anne-Marie Duff co-star in the Warner Bros. production, directed by Michael Hoffman from the novel by Jay Parini.
