When her village is burnt down in the anti-semitic pogroms of the 1920s, a young Russian girl named Fegele (Christina Ricci) is sent to England for her own safety. Ten years later, having now assumed the name of Suzie, she moves to Paris and begins working for an opera company, where she meets and falls in love with a gypsy horse-handler named César (Johnny Depp).
