Bertrand Tavernier directs this French period romance based on a 1622 novella by Madame de Lafayette. Set against the backdrop of the Catholic/Protestant wars that tore France apart in the 16th century, the film tells the story of beautiful young aristocrat Marie de Mézières (Mélanie Thierry), whose passionate love for her cousin Henri de Guise (Gaspard Ulliel) is thwarted when she is forced to marry Philippe, the Prince of Montpensier (Grégoire Leprince-Ringuet).
