Drama from film-maker Michel Hazanavicius starring Bérénice Bejo as Carole, an NGO worker stationed in Chechnya during the first year of the Second Chechen War in 1999. After witnessing the murder of his parents by Russian soldiers, Hadji (Abdul Khalim Mamutsiev) is alone and mute, scarred by the experience. He journeys to an orphanage run by American Helen (Annette Bening), a Red Cross worker. Hadji is taken under the wing of Carole, who is trying her best to get the brutal conflict the attention it needs from international bodies like the United Nations. The story follows Hadji's journey to be reunited with his siblings and to regain his ability to speak with the help of Carole.
