War comedy starring Paul Newman in the title role. When five allied soldiers are captured and held as prisoners in Italy during WWII, it is up to Harry Frigg (Newman) to save them. He is sent behind enemy lines in his mission to set them free as the multinational generals refuse to take orders from each other to orchestrate an escape. Once there problems begin to arise as the would-be hero is sidetracked by an Italian countess (Sylva Koscina) and the prisoners are threatened to be moved to a high security prison camp. With the generals unable to plan an escape it is up to Frigg to set everyone. including himself, free.
