The road with most stories to tell and notorious as one of the most hazardous in the kingdom is the A6 over Shap Fell in Westmorland (now Cumbria). Shap has become a legend - from John'0'Groats to Land's End. The section of the A6 northwards from Kendal to Shap village a matter of some 16 miles began as a drover's trail then a pack horse track - and subsequently a road of major strategic importance. Nowadays following the opening of the M6 in 1970 it has become a backwater and a tourist route. In this DVD we trace the history of the road using rare archive film... Hear reminiscences of the old days from drivers and residents and follow a convoy of historic vehicles as they relive the journey northwards from Kendal up to Shap. [show more]
