When turn-of-the century scientist Alexander Hartdegen (Guy Pearce) uses his newly-invented time machine to travel back and prevent the murder of his girlfriend Emma (Sienna Guillory), he finds that he is nonetheless unable to change the past. Curious as to why this is, Alexander travels into the future to investigate. What he finds is a society divided between the peaceful Eloi and the powerful, predatory Morlocks; sheltered by young Eloi woman Mara (Samantha Mumba), the scientist and his machine are soon caught up in a life and death struggle for the future of the human race.
