Directed by Chris Weitz and starring Kristen Steward, Taylor Lautner and Robert Patterson, New Moon is the second gripping instalment of the hugely-popular Twilight Saga, based on the books by Stephanie Meyer. This chapter begins shortly after Bella's attack, where she narrowly escaped death at the hands of evil vampire James.
Bella and "vegetarian" vampire Edward are head-over-heels in love and as her 18th birthday approaches the rest of the Cullen family decide to throw her a party. However, her happiness comes to an abrupt end when a minor accident leaves... her with a cut finger. The bloodshed proves to be too much for the Cullens and as the thirst overcomes them, they realise that Bella is in too much danger when they're around.
The Cullen family decide to leave Forks and Bella is left heartbroken and withdrawn. Eventually though, she finds comfort in a close friendship with Jacob Black and by living life on the edge, but everything changes again, as danger of a different kind lurks around the corner!

For me, this was an interesting film from two points of view; firstly the love triangle that complicates Bella's life further. As an added 'bonus feature', most female viewers will, I'm sure, be interested in the sudden rites of passage of Jacob and his subsequent rippling 6 pack. The second interesting aspect is the introduction of the Volturi and this is possibly where the film falls foul of some miscasting (anyone who has read the books would attest to this). Michael Sheen is a fine actor but Aro he aint! Ditto for Dakota Fanning and her portrayal of Jane. Overall this picture is different in tone, but that's to be expected as it directed by a different person. You definitely get the feeling of progression from the first film and, as usual, the soundtrack does not disappoint. The three main players are excellent and are ably supported by the actors who play 'Roberts' family i.e. the Cullens. Jackson Rathbone brings a nice, eerie quality to the part of Jasper, who has that same kind of childlike / tragicomic presence that Johnny Depp brought to the part of Edward Scissorhands. An enjoyable way to pass a couple of hours...
This film follows the book much more closely than the first film did, which should go down well with true devotees. On the other hand, viewers not familiar with the books may find the film quite laboured and slow in the first half. That said, most viewers (myself included) most probably fall into the category of slightly obsessed females of various ages so this in all likelihood isn't too much a problem!
The visuals are much better in New Moon than Twilight, with the vampires appearing much more "real" and less like actors with chalk on their faces. The fight scenes are also superb, really conveying speed and strength. Similarly, the wolves/wolf to man transformations are remarkably well-done.
It isn't all roses though. A great strength of the first film was the musical score, which was stunningly good. By comparison, New Moon has taken on a real "Hollywood" feel and, I think, this results in a loss of some of the sense of romance and isolation conveyed in Twilight.
On balance, a very good adaptation of cheesy romantic teen novel that devotees of all ages will enjoy. We eagerly await the next instalment!
