Mia Hansen-Løve writes and directs this drama starring Isabelle Huppert. The film follows high school philosophy teacher Nathalie Chazeaux (Huppert) as she re-evaluates her life in the wake of the death of her mother and the breakdown of her marriage. The Parisian mother of two has her world shattered when her husband of 25 years Heinz (André Marcon) informs her he is leaving her to be with another woman and a week later her possessive mother passes away in her nursing home. Faced with a new-found freedom, Nathalie tries to take back control of her life and find her true self while putting the theories she teaches to her students into practice. As she does so, she develops a close friendship with her favourite former student Fabien (Roman Kolinka) who is trying to find his own path in life.
