Director Jun Ichikawa adapts this story by acclaimed writer Haruki Muraki. Tony Takitani (Issei Ogata) had a solitary childhood and is almost entirely self-contained. Unemotional and withdrawn, Tony starts to come out of his shell when he becomes obsessed with the beautiful Eiko (Rie Miyazawa), a young woman who is in turn obsessed with high fashion. When the get married everything seems to be going well, but then Tony starts to experience the previously unknown emotions of fear and loneliness when he worries that Eiko's obsession with designer clothes will cause her to leave him.
