When Ann (Huppert), a successful concert pianist, briefly witnesses her long-term partner Thomas (Xavier Beauvois) passionately kissing a woman in the doorway of their Paris home, something snaps inside her and she makes a decision to leave her entire life behind and reinvent her existence. Enlisting the help of Georges (Jean-Hugues Anglade), a friend from her distant past, she erases all trace of her past, cuts off her hair and takes to the road, eventually finding a retreat from the world in the abandoned Villa Amalia on the tiny island of Ischia.
